I don't know how to write this without being hyperbolic, but I absolutely was floored by this book. I felt like I was reading the work of a new literary great. I don't want to get too much into the plot because it's a mystery and I'm terrible with accidentally giving away spoilers, but the plot itself--you the reader are trying to uncover what has happened to this woman who you don't even know is dead or not--is surprising and suspenseful the entire 300+ pages. I never wanted it to end. But the most exciting discovery here is not the answer to the mystery, but the unique voice of the author. I haven't been this excited for more work from someone since I saw Bottle Rocket by Wes Anderson. I am not comparing them in terms of tone (so if you don't like him, don't let that deter you from reading this) but in terms of uniqueness. It is funny, descriptive in the most surprising ways and suspenseful as I said earlier. I feel like I can't do it justice by describing it, you just have to read it. Needless to say I haven't felt motivated to write a review like this before, and I probably won't again until her next book!

I have had this one on my tbr for a while now and when I saw that it had an audible companion, I snatched up the audio. It was the first time I used the Whispersync function, switching back and forth from reading to listening. It worked surprisingly well and I kind of dug it.

Laura Lee Bahr pens a weird one here. Shifting narrative perspectives, timelines and story threads - this should have been a total mess. It wasn’t. From the lead character “You” to a ghost, to an investigative reporter in love with a dead girl, this one is part horror/mystery/thriller. The summary describes it as “a tripping-balls Los Angeles noir, where a mysterious dame drags you through a time-warping Bizarro hall of mirrors.” Not a bad description, but I almost didn’t read it because it sounded too “weird”. I wouldn’t categorize it as Bizarro at all, as that is sometimes a turn off for me, but I will say that it was very strange...in a good way. Sometimes during that audio I would switch to the text version and see how exactly it was formatted on the page. It must have been challenging for the narrators at times, however, they pretty much nailed it and managed not to stumble over some of the more unique writing formats.

Well done and highly entertaining. I enjoyed this one a lot and am glad I finally gave it a shot.
I was able to finish it, and the binding was superior (don't you hate books that fall apart on you?). True, it is original and unique, but that's all it has going for it. This book was not enjoyable at all. I kept wanting it to just be over. I didn't care at all about the characters. I was waiting for some mind-blowing twist or revelation, but it was just a huge let down. There are so many loose ends in the book that leave the reader completely unsatisfied. I will definitely not be reading anything else by this author and I would never recommend it to a friend.
The style is so rich and original I hadn't even noticed I was halfway through - and suddenly a surprise floored me. How did I not see that coming? How did Bahr write this truly original, gripping, imaginative piece?
HAUNT fits into my favorite category of art It's unlike anything I've ever read before. Not just the story itself, but the way it's told is so unique. Some of it is in third person, some in second person ("You" are one of the characters) and the narrator has such an original voice.

The only thing I can compare it to is If Kurt Vonnegut adapted a David Lynch movie. So if you dig Lynch or Vonnegut or any artist who takes risks, definitely read this.

The narrative is non-linear, but the theme of death/life is brought out beautifully. By the end of the book, you feel like you've been haunted. That's a good thing, btw.
I read the stellar reviews for this book and I'm always looking for books that aren't easy to categorize and Haunt totally delivers. It's creepy at times, funny, mind-bending and unique, and yet there's a real solid foundation that prevents it from flying off the rails. The characters have depth and aren't one dimensional in the slightest, and they behave erratically given the changing situations, much like real people do. I can't remember when I've seen a narrator (a shifting perspective that adds to the mystery) who expresses contempt, pity and exasperation for her reader and second person protagonist, and yet instead of turning me off this enhanced the experience. This is a book I'll reread later, and I'm looking forward to that, although I need to chew on it for a while before I pick it up again. If you're okay with mystery and unanswered questions, and like probing into what it means to exist, both as a person, as an image in someone else's head and as a literary device, than you'll enjoy this book immensely.

My only complaint (and I guess this is just a sign that I'm getting old), is that on the cover the publisher prints a quote of praise that drops an f-bomb. I'm not for censorship, and within the pages of the book I'll read anything, but if I was to read this in front of my daughter, or on the bus, or at a coffee shop out in public I might be a little self-conscious about throwing that word out there. I appreciate that he loves this book and wants to express his feelings with some gusto, but sort of how I wear a collared shirt to the office, presentation matters. Please don't take that as a knock on the story itself, which I whole-hardheartedly give 5 stars, but having that so high-pro feels a little bit like swearing to see if you can get away with it.
Do you read this book or just the reviews? If you read the reviews and decide not to read this book can you claim to be a reader of great books? Do you trust John Skipps new imprint Fungasm press and there first book or do you just buy something from a more experienced publisher. Will you talk to the cute girl at your job or just dream about her? This book is a twisted trip into a choose your own adventure vibe but never fully dives into that scene. You never really know whats going to happen next here and thus its tough to stop reading it. Just a great book that leaves you wanting to read it again to pick up new clues to see what really is happening.
