On the Edge My Story Richard Hammond 9780297853275 Books

I like Richard Hammond's sense of humor and respect his obvious desire to be honest about a difficult subject, but the book doesn't really provide all that much insight into how a traumatic brain injury has affected his life or that of others. It's told (alternately) by him and his wife, which is an interesting device initially but becomes a little confusing and contrived by the end of the book. I also find it a little odd that his wife isn't listed as the co-author.

Unfortunately the book comes across less as a soul-searching look at what it's like to face the possibility of losing your very sense of self, and more as a "we had a rough month or two but everyone was wonderful and turned out fine" story. Entertaining—don't get me wrong—but it's the work of someone who feels he has too much to lose if he isn't polite and funny about a devastating subject.

On the Edge My Story Richard Hammond 9780297853275 Books Reviews

Richard and Mindy Hammond have written a riveting, sometimes emotional story about the process of recovery after traumatic brain injury. The accident itself is well documented, as is Richard’s return to work on Top Gear, but the support and determination of Richard, and those around him, to promote his recovery was at the time a very private matter. Finally detailing this process can only give encouragement and hope to other patients and their families who must deal with severe brain injuries. Mindy especially writes of Richard’s recovery process, sometimes factual and clinical but often moving giving us insight into how Richard was able to recover with the dedication and help of his family, friends, colleagues and, of course, a cadre of healthcare professionals. I read this account in “one sitting”, despite knowing how it ended, because I was so enthralled by this real drama playing out through the pages. Thank you to Mindy and Richard for sharing this story.
I was curious about the crash and learned he had written a book. It had good reviews and so I decided to go for it.
I wasn't disappointed.

You'll find yourself reading each line of his in his voice--every little aspect of it. You'll hear Clarkson in his, May in his. Mindy's wasn't in her voice (as I don't have a knowledge bank of her voice for my brain to work with) it wasn't in my own mental reading voice either. It was just so nicely written that it was clear and alive. It told the story remarkably, and I highly recommend it.

I did cry a few times, and you will see a story of great love between Mr. and Mrs. Hammond. Even his children do amazingly well in the face of such a weighty injury.
He's really a blessed man.
On the Edge My Story
By Richard & Mindy Hammond

In September 2006 British Radio and TV personality Richard Hammond suffered a devastating crash while filming a segment for Top Gear. During his final run in a Jet Powered car at speeds approaching 290 miles an hour. The car experienced a failure of the front right tire causing it to roll. Leading to a serious lift threating brain injury.
This is the story of his life and recovery co-authored by Richard and his wife, Mindy. The two viewpoints presented his before the crash, hers during the early days of his recovery and then the two as Richard’s recovery progressed add much to the overall story.
My wife and I took turns reading his story. Err should I say on the day this book arrived my wife grabbed it and allowed me to view it only after she was through. Then pushed me to read it so we could discuss what had happened.
I’ll be honest we both enjoy Richard in the programs he has done. My wife has become quite a fan of Top Gear and now Crash Course another of his programs.
His story is well written and riveting. His recovery was quick yet devastating and seeing it from the two sides just adds to the overall content. As he points out those who suffer injuries such as his may look fine on the outside while not even close to being fine on the inside.
This story was made personal from the fact that in 2012 I suffered a major stroke. As I read Mindy’s account of Richard’s hospitalization and recovery it brought new insight into what my own loving wife went through in the hours, days, weeks, and even months of our own journey.
This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. I encourage everyone to read it and learn from Richard and Mindy’s experience.
Richard Hammond is perhaps my favorite of the three hosts of "Good Top Gear" and The Grand Tour. His personality doesn't always translate well into print, though. The first few chapters, detailing his youthful adventures and some of his formative years, are boorish and drawn out far too much, with unnecessary detail. I was very close to putting this down, until the point where he has The Big Crash.

You see, at that point, his wife Mindy takes over the writing duties, and Mindy's writing is riveting. Honest, heartfelt, and wide open, Mindy shares all that she went through in learning of Richard's crash, being ever by his side during the recovery, and managing their young girls and Richard's public persona.

I like Richard on the TV. I want more writing from Mindy Hammond.
