I rarely do book reviews because I don't think I'm very good at them but I love Preston & Child books. Pendergast is a great character and I love the entire series. A good book for me is when I can't put it down, find myself reading it when I should be doing something else, and sad when I hit the last page. Worthy of a review even though I can't succinctly delve into the character development or story line to do it justice. So just let me say that the book delivers everything I adore about losing myself in a book!Tags : Amazon.com: Dance of Death (9780446617093): Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child: Books,Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child,Dance of Death,Grand Central Publishing,0446617091,Thrillers - General,Adventure thriller,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction-Thriller,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Modern fiction,Mystery & Detective - General,MysterySuspense,New York,PRESTON, DOUGLAS - PROSE & CRITICISM,Psychopaths; Serial killers; Stolen gems; Brothers; Museums; Exhibitions; FBI agents,Thrillers - Suspense,United States
Dance of Death Douglas Preston Lincoln Child Books Reviews
As a lover of fast-paced thrillers, I have read nearly all of Preston and Child's books, and loved them all. Until this one, that is. I am good at suspension of disbelief for the sake of enjoying a great story. However, this book had so many lucky coincidences and miraculous last-second escapes that I rebelled. This book also committed one of my most despised sins the authors forced the characters to do unnatural and disappointing things. Several times, a character whom I wanted to like (a hero figure in the novel) did something that was ridiculously stupid and out of character, solely so that the author could move the plot in a direction that he wanted, or manipulate the reader's emotions in a shameless manner. I cease to enjoy a book when a lead character loses my respect. I don't want to think of my supposed hero as a stupid boor. Honest mistakes are one thing, but willful ignorance is another.
Granted, this novel had Preston and Child's signature high tension and fast action. That was good, and the only reason I managed to read it through. But I became angry at the authors several times for how they treated their hapless main characters, and such anger ruins one's appreciation of a book.
Cemetery Dance is a page-turner of a book. Based in Manhattan, there are a lot of unusual and strange events going on. FBI agent Pendergast and NYPD detective D'Agosta have their hands full with zombiis and cultists roaming the night. The unbelievable has New York City on edge. This novel has the making of a good movie. The book has one drawback and that is the development of women characters. Why do they have to use the old cliché of having a woman pass out when she confronts the unexpected. This is a 1950s movie plot. The next upcoming book uses the same old technique. Enough already!
Smithback, that controversial reporter and an important character in previous books, is brutally murdered and his wife, Nora Kelly, attacked- by a man who was supposedly dead two weeks ago. Well, that's how this intense thriller starts. I soon learned about a secretive community of decrepit buildings called the Ville, on the northernmost tip of Manhattan, which houses a cult which does animal sacrifices, and may have a connection to Smithback's (and later) killings. Pendergast is immediately on the scene, much to the surprise of NYPD and Lt. D'Agosta. The book is a real thrill ride. Especially the visits to the Ville. A major twist ensues in the book which completely threw me off. A must read for fans of this series!
Pendergast is beyond heroic to the point of asinine. He knows everything. Like. Everything. Science, art, history, languages, religions, philosophy, poetry, ... He can do it all. All the martial arts. All of them. Mad driving skills. Master of disguise. I barely handled it in Brimstone. At this point... I'm not sure I can read another one of his books.
D'Agosta is constantly being castrated in these stories, so he can't ever hold a candle to Pendergast.
You know what? .. I can't even bother writing more in this review. I can't. I've already wasted too much time on this book. There is literally nothing in this book that I couldn't tear into. Way way too much to cover. I just can't.
Zombies in New York? Really? Ok, this is an older novel and very well written. I always have trouble putting down a Pendergast novel, and this was no exception. Two fun characters from previous books are attacked & killed; multiple witnesses report the attacker had died weeks before. How can a dead man return to attack people and why these particular two? Pendergast & D'gosta are once again teamed up to solve the case, leading them to northern NYC and voodoo. I love all these books; the reason I rated this one a tad lower than normal was because I hated to see my favorite journalist get smoked!
Preston & Child have quickly become some of my favorite authors. Unfortunately I haven't had a lot of time to read and just decided to catch up. I purchased this book quite a while ago and dug back through my orders because I feel it was important to note that the book is missing several pages and has several duplicate pages. Also, there are several chapters bound in the wrong section of the book. I was able to get to chapter nine and then it skips to chapter 59.
As far as the storyline....I love pendergast and will definately go buy the book again so I can continue reading what has grabbed my interest so much.
